The Maine Coon Cat is one of the oldest domestic cats in North America . It was shown at Farmers Exhibitions as early as in the 19th century. At those Exhibitions they might have competed in "Best rat-catcher", "most beautyful cat" an so on. At the same Exhibition there were all kinds of animals, for example Cows, Pigs and Chickens. As a result of this the interest in this Magnificent Cat increased.
The story of the first Maine Coon Cats began in the State of Maine in the USA . The first part of the name comes from the State MAINE and the second part of the name comes from the RACOON in which local folklore spoke of a Cross Breeding with Domestic Cats. They said that you could see on the furry tail that it was a mix between Racoon and Domestic Cat. But nowadays we know that it's not so. However we can all agree on that the Maine Coon Cat has a Magnificent tail.
During the war the interest for the breed almost disappeard. At the same time the interest grew a lot for the Persian Cat but luckily there were a small group of enthusiasts that kept the interest for the Maine Coon Cat alive.
